The United States says it will step up its sanctions campaign against Venezuela’s oil sector as Caracas tries to diversify its customers.
The US Special Representative for Venezuela said Washington would be more aggressive in punishing people and companies buying Venezuelan oil. Elliott Abrams said Washington’s sanctions would not only focus on Venezuela’s ally, Russia, but will include Asian countries as well. Last week, the U-S blacklisted a subsidiary of the Russian energy giant Rosneft, which does business with Venezuela’s state-oil company PDVeysa. In response, the Venezuelan company said it has shifted its cargoes from the blacklisted firm to another affiliate of the Russian oil giant. For years, the US has been seeking to oust the elected Venezuelan government of President Nicolas Maduro.
