Syrian army retakes strategic base along M5 highway

A Syrian war monitor says government forces have taken control of a key base along the main Aleppo-Damascus highway.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the move was aimed at consolidating a security belt around the M-5 motorway. The key highway links Syria’s four largest cities and was recaptured by Syrian soldiers and their allied fighters earlier on Tuesday. The latest gain marks a victory for the Syrian government amid its pledge to retake all of the country’s Northwestern areas from foreign-backed militants, who are still in control of parts of Aleppo and Idlib provinces.
