The Debate - Limiting Trump's War Power

The US Senate voted on Thursday to limit President Donald Trump’s power to attack Iran without congressional approval. The resolution was passed by 55 to 45 votes with 8 Republicans voting in favor of the bill. Trump has pledged to veto the resolution. He had earlier threatened to target 52 cultural sites in Iran amid growing tensions between the two countries. The vote came six weeks after Trump ordered an airstrike in Iraq’s capital Baghdad that killed a top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and several of his companions including deputy commander of Iraq’s popular mobilization forces, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. The assassination pushed the US and Iran to the brink of a full-blown war. Iran retaliated the US provocation, by attacking a US base in Iraq that, Washington says has so far left 109 US service personnel suffering from traumatic brain injuries.
