The United States is reportedly planning to sell a number of advanced weapons, including cruise missiles and drones to Taiwan amid escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Sources say the weapons packages from American arms manufacturers, including Lockheed Martin, Boeing and General Atomics are moving their way through the export process. They said a notification to the US Congress is expected within weeks. Some of the weapons had been requested by Taiwan more than a year ago. The weapons sale is expected to draw anger from China which considers self-ruled Taiwan part of its own territory. Tensions are on the rise between the United States and China over a string of issues, including trade and disputes about the spread of the coronavirus.
