Barbados has announced its intention to remove Britain’s Queen Elizabeth as head of state and become a republic by November next year. Barbados governor-general said time has come for the Caribbean island to fully leave its colonial past behind. Buckingham Palace and Britain’s foreign office said the issue was a matter for the people of Barbados. The former British colony gained independence in 19-66, but has maintained a formal link with the British monarchy. Queen Elizabeth is the head of state of the U-K and 15 other countries formerly ruled by Britain, including Australia and Canada.
