EU: UK efforts to change withdrawal deal illegal

The European Union has warned the UK against unilaterally modifying the Brexit deal with the bloc, saying such an attempt will be in violation of international law.

In her annual State of the European Union address, the EU chief said breaking treaties is bad for Britain and its relations with the rest of the world. Von Der Leyen warned that hopes of reaching a post-Brexit trade deal with London are fading away. She expressed disappointment over the slow progress in talks, cautioning that there is very little time left for the two sides to hammer out differences. Brussels is outraged over a bill put forth by the British government to alter the divorce agreement. The move has plunged the Brexit deal back into crisis less than four months before the UK finally leaves the bloc in December.
