U.S. State Department’s acting legal adviser accuses Iran of posing threat to global security

The United States has called on the International Court of Justice to reject Iran’s bid to lift sanctions imposed by the administration of President Donald Trump.

Acting Legal Adviser of the US State Department was making his argument to the top UN court via videolink. He also accused Iran of posing a threat to global security. Iran is scheduled to present its arguments on Wednesday. The Islamic Republic dragged the US to The Hague in 2018 after Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal and re-instated sanctions on the country. Iran says the US move breached the 1955 Treaty of Amity between the two countries. Previously, the I-C-J ruled twice in favor of Iran when it ordered the recovery of Tehran’s frozen assets, and easing sanctions on humanitarian supplies. The I-C-J rulings are binding but the court has no power to enforce them.
