Bahrain has agreed to normalize relations with Israel, becoming only the fourth Arab state and the second Persian Gulf country to strike such a deal.

US President Donald Trump tweeted the news after he spoke by phone to both Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A joint statement issued by the three leaders said they had agreed on the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel and Bahrain. The UAE last month agreed to normalize ties with Israel under a US-brokered deal. Bahrain was the first country to welcome the deal. However, the normalization was strongly condemned by Palestinians as a stab in the back and a betrayal of their liberation cause.
