President Lukashenko says Washington behind Belarus recent protests

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says he does not rule out an early presidential election.

Lukashenko said elections could be held after the constitutional reform which he proposed recently. The Belarusian leader once again rejected the call for him to step down amid a wave of protests against his rule. He said his supporters would be attacked if he left office. Lukashenko has ruled Belarus since 1994 and claimed victory in the disputed August 9 presidential election. The country has been the scene of anti-government protests since then. Demonstrators say the election was massively rigged, a charge that Lukashenko strongly denies.
