Protests against racial injustice continue in Portland

The acting US Homeland Security secretary says federal troops will not leave the city of Portland until local law enforcement can handle the ongoing demonstrations against racial injustice.

Chad Wolf warned that if the state did not handle the situation, the National Guard could be deployed to the violence-stricken city. On Thursday, Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced that federal forces were preparing to leave Portland. She had earlier said that the agents had brought violence and acted as an occupying force. The West Coast city has faced over two months of protests since the police killing of an unarmed African American in Minneapolis in late May.
