China says Canadians not detained 'arbitrarily'

China has slammed what it calls Canada’s irresponsible statements about two Canadians arrested for spying in China.

China’s embassy in Ottawa said Canada needs to end its megaphone diplomacy against Beijing. China arrested former Canadian diplomat in Beijing Michael Kovrig and North Korean consultant Michael Spavor in December 20-18. They are formally indicted on charges of espionage and collecting state secrets. Canada’s premier has called their arrest arbitrary but China says this is groundless. Beijing has also slammed Canada’s detention of the financial director of Chinese telecom giant Huawei, at the request of the US. Beijing says the move is political and makes Ottawa an accomplice in Washington’s suppression of Chinese high-tech enterprises.
